Regional Differences 2 - Game Sack

hi and welcome to game sag it has been almost eight years since there was an episode of regional differences so I thought why not create another now in case you are a little slow what we will do is take a look at all 'original Japanese and the changes they have made for us Westerners sometimes the changes are minor but other times many things change for who knows why anyway let's enter it

karnov on the nes is a fun part of the arcade game you play as karnov surprise surprise and your mission is to beat the game well at least in the international version here there is no story anywhere unless you read the manual instructions or maybe the back of the but turn on the Japanese version and you are greeted with a nice introductory story with its unique music which is quite special considering how there is not much variety in the music in this basically an evil wizard is causing some problems so god put you down you were bad but now to atone your previous evil life you have to defeat the wizard even between stages get some additional updates to the story of the script also has a game screen that warns you of your failure maybe these have been removed at because of the religious nature i am not sure the funny thing is you can put this genie code of the game in the american game and recover they never translated the intro so it's just gobbledygook but it's nice that it's in there this code doesn't restore scenes between stages or supervised play however gameplay is mostly the same as far as i can tell that there might be some different elements appearing in different places but i haven't really paid much attention to this interesting aspect, the famicom game does not allow you to continue the international edition as a continuous screen and you can use it as much as you want there is a hidden continuous function pressing select and launch on the game over screen on the famicom game but you can only use it a couple of times so all in all the addition we got is a little easier due to the unlimited continues, also you don't like it when the content is excluded from our Games localization

eat a lot lo and swat city under siege for the genesis saw what came out this in 1990 this is a pretty decent platformer that could have been really good start as a human cop who can shoot and jump controls very well after two stages turn you into a robocop dollar shop the type of craps control in bed for the rest of the game and it's embarrassing at best the main problem is the jetpack letting you fly you just move too fast with this the game abuses the jetpack and for all the years I owned this game I always felt embarrassed, I wish the whole game was just a human cop as the game is really fun with him is the one that came out first in Japan anyway and I remember calling the power play games and ask if they had any new games and why i had money and wanted something new the guy on the phone told me eswa came or for the mega drive and asked if this game had any voices because obviously it's a teen question would ask me said i did it and they sounded like real recordings well that was all i needed to hear so i went to the store a little bit later and i took this copy, played it and played it loving the real voice sounds coming out of my 16-bit genesis console i was never able to get past stage 5, however the version American came out later that year with pretty horrible box art compared to the Japanese version in my opinion and yours too I have never played the American version to date so what are the differences for a Japanese

the version is called the cyber police eswat special weapons and enhanced tactics the international version is called the cyber police eswat city under siege and just wait no there is more the international version has removed two of the four voices that are in the game the United States has a voice on the title screen and this too every time you beat a completed level mission but the Japanese version has an additional voice that says this when you hit a level while the cyborg then stops and this presumably when you take the breath of the game was neutralized because they removed them from in the North American and European versions the Japanese game is even more difficult to blow up these doors will result in the closing of new ones for example making it difficult to get by in the North American and European version the doors remain closed there are a lot of little things like this which makes this version simpler, finally the japan version if it has no continuos while the international version gives you three for that reason i was able to do a lot more in the international version oh yeah and the japanese version is a little bit more expensive if you have to own this just so you know what

at the time the Japanese version has some noticeable differences, the first is an introduction that has the planet destroying the thing from the Star Wars episode vii uh oh now it's targeting Earth so you have to get on board this thing and fight it till it saves the earth obviously the north american version starts straight to the title screen i can't even imagine why they removed this intro there is definitely nothing outrageous here that tight ass parents would cry after your mech color it is white and orange in the famicom version and orange and magenta in the north american edition which besides being partially redesigned also almost every stage has seen color changes usually making the north american version a little darker all around, honestly i think that the North American version looks better is just less harsh and more enjoyable to watch most of the boss fights share the same colors and if there are differences it is extremely minor the gameplay is more the same in both versions, although level 6 has barriers at the edges of the screen that are difficult to avoid in the Japanese game, they are nowhere to be found in the North American version also in expert difficulty so once again they made it easier for us westerners these differences are interesting and I'm glad they made the changes they made for our version what do you think

here is strider on genesis that came to the console in 1990 this was awesome in its day because it was the first game ever to have eight mega powers i mean its more human brain memory absolutely amazing its a great arcade game port all all in all and they did a really good job bringing this home the pictures and sounds are all here mostly good here compared to the arcade there is no more dubbed dialogue in the cutscenes that are between the levels and obviously other things had to have slight fixes alternatives such as not having enough memory to animate the brontosaurus feet, so they had to hide them behind these bushes, so what differences exist between the Japanese version and the North American European version that came out well later the Japanese game has more voices every time it strider swings a sword he says

all arcade versions of strider have this voice clip, but it has been removed from the international version of the home console. Someone saw probably thought that a game that said that all children of the ancient gods die was sacrilegious or something that people back then were weaklings that no one would be offended that these days would be the next there was a continuing feature added to the international version you cannot continue in the Japanese game at all so yes again that is why the Japanese version is tougher finally there were some bugs that have been fixed for the international edition but I have never encountered many if any, in my playthroughs of both versions of this game

unlock them by tapping it again international versions make them constantly move back and forth at all times and just tap on when you want to lock them not only but the shots fired by these things are interesting looking kind of fireballs but in the japanese version they are literally lonely pixels how boring these pixels are no less effective although even the japanese version does not have rapid fire unless you have the laser weapon while the other regions have it on all weapons not only on that one but when you take a hit in the Japanese game, by default you go back to the basic starting weapon talking about taking hits you only have three hit points in the Japanese game instead of six and the others so yes, the Japanese version is much more difficult, even the player death animations i am different the differences do not end there oh no the music is also slightly different in many levels, for example, in the North American game it is re produced at a higher pitch than Japanese take a listen

this is the only thing adapted for the friend, although the game will run slower if you play it at 50 hertz after the game famicom has a different voice clip at the beginning of each level the other regions got rid of all this and now they only have a single voice clip you have to destroy them the earth is counting on you good luck you have to admit the voice sounds really good for the nes oh and you may have noticed the different graphics between each stage versions and eventually they swapped the order of stages three and four for the international edition, so take the battleship stage first in Japan, in general, I like the North American edition more and feel they have made some improvements and it looks a little more refined except for the 'introduction so far the Japanese versions of these games have been more difficult than their western counterparts now let's look the other side of that coin for a couple of games that are much, much more than fficile outside of japan this is exile 2 for super cd-rom pc engine from telenet this is an action RPG where you make your way through side scrolling locations by killing enemies by leveling up and then buying things in rpg style segments its a pretty good game not great or anything but definitely not bad its still an easy touch just like exile before it came out on turbo graphics 16 and saw genesis in north america here this game is known as exile evil phenomenon working designs handled the localization of this and as almost everything they touched they made drastic changes to almost everything they could because they should get it right just because they can obviously the game is now immensely harder the enemies are stronger and you are weaker the scorpion that dies with two hits in the japanese game now it takes four hits to destroy it in japan you can enter the first scorpion without attacking and he dies even if it hurts you you can then enter the second scorpion dies ad you are still alive the third hit will kill you even if in the north american edition you can't even survive walking in the first scorpion, also the strength of the experience and the relationship levels I'm completely stunned check out how fast this plant thing dies when I'm only level three and still have the default setting

sword because i could not understand the shops because they were in japanese here in the american version i am hacking it with 438 experience points which is level 5 plus a power sword and see how long it takes him to die he has much more life to start and l The whole game is like that and it gets pretty crazy in the later stages once your experience and weapons are all maxed out and you can't grind to seriously compensate for some of these enemies you take almost half of your life away if you touch them, the greater difficulty is not helped by the fact that you walk so damn close to the edge of the screen that you can't see the incoming enemies very well, this was already a problem in the Japanese original the game is beatable but that doesn't mean it's not broken too high victor working projects ireland claims to have accidentally made it too difficult but had to follow it as the record had to be shipped despite claiming that the pre cedant build them if before they made it too hard it was almost perfect oopsie the translation itself is full of the typical humor of your typical working design even if it's not as bad as most of their later versions would be about it, it's not yet great although for example they get along really well calling the main character poopy boy here is where your search ends booby boy one thing for the better that the work projects have changed is that a parallax scroll has been added to the clouds on the stages all 'open so it's clean at least you will have some interesting scrolling clouds and some nice colors to watch as you unfairly die, plus they changed the game screen from spacious on Sadler's grave to this boy on Sadler's grave for some reason, however I advise you to look for the unworked version of this game which has been modified to remove the so-called miles executive oramenti of the drawings made for the difficulty keeping intact the translation and the graphic improvements

here is the adventures of bayou billy from konami on the nes this is a game that does not know what it wants to be has fighting segments first person shooting segments where you can use a controller or even the zapper and finally driving segments this game is called city crazy in japan where it first came out on famicom is a fun game that pretty much anyone can be may need to continue once or twice but you can definitely beat it so it's kind of easy somebody at konami ask to increase the difficulty for international regions and I have the impression that the developers have raised the difficulty as high as possible out of pure spite that they were asked, so what have changed everything compared to the original Japanese the enemies in the fighting parts of the game require twice as many hits to kill and cause you double damage when they hit you oh and they also move a little bit faster because you know why not some levels present tano slightly different designs in b In the other bayou billy stage 1 and stage 3 you are forced to fight a pair of alligators you don't need to fight any alligators in the mad city unless you want all of this to make the fighting game stages a huge chore from getting through first person shooting stages you start with less ammo which means you have to store them and be on the lookout for extra ammo i cant say i really had a lot harder with these stages in bayou billy than mad city apart from that the driving phases but now they are horrible they were actually pretty fun in the crazy city of bayou billy they made the road leaner and a lot windier and it also makes them look more choppy plus is that you have to keep up with the d -pad all the time in bayou billy they also cleared the life bar here which means death by blow and you only have a few lives to get to the end good luck anyway i found more easy to hit the planes and helicopters with my grenades and bayou Billy that with dynamite inside mad city the interesting thing is that in the Japanese game there are some indestructible vehicles that are prowling around and can kill you with one shot surprisingly got rid of

these in bayou billy i am surprised they haven't quadrupled the amount of them there are four different endings in mad city but only one in bayou billy not like most people would ever see it the changes don't stop there they updated this graphically too stage one features a different texture in the dense trees in the background not sure why they took the time to change it but it's okay the viewfinder and shooting stages are now round instead of square again i don't know why but that's ok your jeep in the driving stages was even hanged a little bit for some reason now its wider and with the leaner roads making things even crappier i'm sorry i mean more fun the palm trees and crazy city lights have been replaced with thicker and boring poles which obviously are much easier to come across before each stage is now a graphical representation of the controller you should use for that level the first o plan of billy's oh god in the intro is now more detailed billy colors wh it loses a gun level have also been changed the final stage here originally had a red floor in the crazy city the floor is now purple and bayou billy maybe this change helped them sell a few more copies many of the enemies in the game have different colors or even slightly different designs, the final bosses look a little different and obviously feel like they have to take a billion more hits, finally annabelle the girl you are trying to save shows more skins in international versions so it's a good change i think we're all aboard with i mean usually it's the other way around even though the sound has changed there are some slight changes to some tracks music which is not really worth mentioning but the added voices sure are of course there is this now the fireball adventures but you also get a res at the end of each movie between the phases overall I am good with the graphic and sound changes they have made but friend they went too far with the difficulty especially with the driving phases so I recommend mad city instead it is more fun even if it is a little too easy
